Studying Tips

  1. Discover your learning style

    • Most of us have a preferred way of learning.

Get to know the learning style you're most comfortable with and study in the ways you learn best.

      • Auditory learners - prefer to learn by listening. Try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people.

You might like to record key points and play them back.

      • Visual learners prefer to learn by seeing. Try using colours in your notes

and draw diagrams to help represent key points. You could try to remember some ideas as images.

      • Tactile/kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing. Try using techniques like role-playing

or building models to revise key points.

  2. Find out about the exam

    • Find out as much as you can about the exam. Questions to ask include:
      • How much is the exam worth to your overall mark in the subject?
      • What type of exam is it (for example, multiple choice, essay, open book, take-home)?
  3. Ask for Help

    • Don’t feel bad if you need to ask for help. People you can talk to about exams include:
      • Teachers
      • Tutors
      • Classmates
  4. Sort out your subject material

    • Before starting to review a subject it helps to:
      • check you have all of the handouts
      • put your notes in order
      • read over any course outline or subject guide
      • write your own summaries of each textbook chapter or section of the subject guide.

Ways to Reduce Stress and Anxiety

  1. Get Active and/or Meditate
    • Physical activity pumps up your feel-good endorphins and other natural neural chemicals

that enhance your sense of well-being.

    • Meditation can instill a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional

      well-being and your overall health.

  2. Connect with Others and Assert Yourself
    • Social contact is a good stress reliever because it can offer distraction, provide support

and help you tolerate life's up and downs.

    • Learning to say no or being willing to delegate can help you manage your to-do list and your stress.
  3. Get Enough Sleep
    • Sleep is the time when your brain and body recharge. And the quality and amount of sleep you get can

affect your mood, energy level, concentration and overall functioning.

  4. Keep a Journal
    • Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a good release for otherwise pent-up emotions.

Don't think about what to write — just let it happen.
