Studying Tips
Discover your learning style
- Most of us have a preferred way of learning.
Get to know the learning style you're most comfortable with and study in the ways you learn best.
- Auditory learners - prefer to learn by listening.
Try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people.
You might like to record key points and play them back.
- Visual learners prefer to learn by seeing. Try using colours
in your notes
and draw diagrams to help represent key points. You could try to remember some ideas as images.
- Tactile/kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing.
Try using techniques like role-playing
or building models to revise key points.
Find out about the exam
- Find out as much as you can about the exam. Questions to ask include:
- How much is the exam worth to your overall mark in the subject?
- What type of exam is it (for example, multiple choice, essay, open book, take-home)?
Ask for Help
- Don’t feel bad if you need to ask for help. People you can talk to about exams include:
- Teachers
- Tutors
- Classmates
Sort out your subject material
- Before starting to review a subject it helps to:
- check you have all of the handouts
- put your notes in order
- read over any course outline or subject guide
- write your own summaries of each textbook chapter or section of the subject guide.
Ways to Reduce Stress and Anxiety
- Get Active and/or Meditate
- Physical activity pumps up your feel-good endorphins and other
natural neural chemicals
that enhance your sense of well-being.
-
Meditation can instill a sense of calm,
peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional
well-being and your overall health.
- Connect with Others and Assert Yourself
-
Social contact is a good stress reliever because it can offer distraction,
provide support
and help you tolerate life's up and downs.
- Learning to say no or being willing to delegate can help you manage your to-do list and your stress.
- Get Enough Sleep
-
Sleep is the time when your brain and body recharge.
And the quality and amount of sleep you get can
affect your mood, energy level, concentration and overall functioning.
- Keep a Journal
- Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a good release for otherwise pent-up emotions.
Don't think about what to write — just let it happen.
